Bridging those generational divides and capitalizing on their differences has been a key asset as it has amassed a portfolio of commercial, residential, industrial and mining properties spanning 2,000 acres of Pierce and King counties.

What’s been the key to the company’s longevity?

Fiscal conservatism, hard work, dedication and a deep-seated sense of responsibility ... have been instrumental in steering the company through challenges over the years. However, it’s important to acknowledge that there has been luck along the way – opportunities seized, moments of serendipity and unforeseen circumstances that played to our advantage.

How has the mission changed or evolved since the company was founded?

It has undergone a fascinating evolution akin to a generational relay race, passing the baton from one era to the next. From Harry Corliss’ entrepreneurial zeal to Scott and Tim’s modernization efforts, culminating in Eric and Steve’s emphasis on data-driven decision-making ... each generational shift represents a renaissance of sorts, bringing fresh perspectives and tackling new obstacles.

How do you balance the desire to keep things in the family with the need to grow revenue?

While bringing on external investors may be tempting for accelerated growth ... by keeping control within the family, we maintain autonomy over decision-making and ensure alignment with our values and vision for the business. However, we also recognize the importance of evolving with the times and preparing the business for the future. There’s growing pressure to implement systems and processes that can streamline operations and pave the way for a smoother transition to the next generation of leadership.

What do you love about working with family? What drives you crazy?

One of the things we love most is the deep sense of connection and shared purpose. We understand each other on a level that goes beyond mere coworkers and allows us to use talent in more intentional ways. At the same time, finding that balance between work and family time can be a constant struggle.
